2010.09.01 - Mariska Hargitay crosses over to new Law & Order LA

Woo hoo! Mariska Hargitay is coming to Los Angeles.

1Well, at least to the new L.A. offshoot of the Law & Order franchise…

"I got to work with them yesterday," Hargitay told me at the Emmys. "They have an incredible cast…I think it's going to be strong right out of the gate."

Her hunky costar Christopher Meloni hasn't crossed over from SVU to the West Coast…yet. "I hope to," he said. "I always like a free trip out to L.A. The mother ship did the same thing with us when we were starting out to give us a little lift. That's all we really needed, a little push."

Hargitay says her guest storyline is inspired by her own victims advocacy work. "We are doing the show about the backlog of untested rape kits" she said. "It's something people don't know about. After a woman's been raped and goes through a four- to six-hour very traumatizing and invasive procedure you would expect it gets tested.

"But often times, most of the times, they sit on a shelf in a police facility," she continued. "It's something my foundation is trying to change, to eradicate the backlog."

Good job, Detective Benson.

2010.08.29 - `SVU has never looked Better, or Younger`

A funny thing happened when NBC opted not to renew the original ‘Law & Order’ for a 21st season – the crime drama’s original offshoot, ‘SVU,’ became the old kid on the ‘L&O’ block.

“We’re the wisened old pros,” concurs Christopher Meloni, who plays Detective Elliot Stabler. “But we’ve never looked better, or younger.”

Speaking with Fancast at P.F. Chang’s Home Menu Frozen Moments pre-Emmys gifting lounge, Meloni joked that ‘SVU’s secret to staying fresh was “Botox.” In actuality, though, the series has a few new tricks up its sleeve as its 12th season premiere nears on September 22.

For one, there’s a new ADA on the scene, played by ‘Precious’ star Paula Patton. Though Meloni has yet to work with the new addition (she doesn’t surface until Episode 5), “All the whispering says that she’s hot,” he shares. “And she’s a fantastic actress.”

There’s also a remodeled squad room on the way, when one of this season’s early episode makes a ruins of the old digs.

Also freshening things up is the casting of ‘Lost’ charmer Henry Ian Cusick as an ex-Marine and graphic artist who could prove to be a love interest for Detective Olivia Benson (played by Emmy nominee Mariska Hargitay).

Meloni was mum on that storyline, except to say that Stabler should be fine with any somethin’-somethin’ that surfaces ‘tween Stabler’s partner and this enigmatic newcomer. “It’s OK. She needs it,” the actor says with a wink. “It’s OK.”

Asked if any new personal drama might be on tap for Stabler this season, Meloni waved off the suggestion. “We’re geared up with issues-oriented shows at the beginning,” he said. “I guess we’ll get into the more personal stuff later.”

2010.08.27 - Christine Lahti returns to SVU

christine lahtiAn Oscar-nominated actress will return to Law & Order: SVU this season — but don't get nervous, it's not Sharon Stone. It's Christine Lahti, reappearing as overbearing ADA Sonya Paxton sent by the DA's office to ride herd on the SVU team.

A nasty alcoholic, she butted heads with Stabler (Chris Meloni) and was eventually forced to enter rehab. Paxton reappeared in a later episode only to warn Alexandra Cabot (Stephanie March) not to trust the cops. She'll return in this season's ninth episode on a case and is supposedly all cleaned up. "She has a huge scene where she faces off with Stabler," SVU's executive producer Neal Baer tells TV Guide Magazine exclusively.

2010.08.27 - NBC uses Storytelling through Law & Order SVU...

to explain complex health information.

Neal Baer, Producer of Law and Order SVU regularly uses public health information to help craft stories. In one episode he used information around HPV (Human Papillomavirus) and its causal relationship to cervical cancer within the storyline. The goal was to help educate the public watching SVU Law and Order about HPV and its relationship to cervical cancer.

It’s important to note that persisten HPV infections are recognized as the major cause of cervical cancer.

What’s particularly interesting in this case is that NBC and Kaiser Permanente partnered together and ran a study on the level of HPV awareness bracketing the time before and after the HPV-centered episode aired. They looked at people’s awareness one week before the show, one week after, and six weeks after. The study showed that the audience learned the most about HPV in the week following the air date.

The most significant change in people’s knowledge is their increased awareness about the causal relationship between HPV and cervical cancer when comparing one week before and one week after the show aired. 41% more people understood the causal relationship after the show aired. This is fairly complex information to understand and retain, and it shows the power and effectiveness of storytelling to increase the retention of complex information.

In 2008, Neal Baer spoke further about how he uses incorporates meaningful information, including health-related issues, into storylines. And more recently, Neal spoke at an IDEO event about the power of storytelling.

2010.08.18 - Exclusive: Gloria Reuben Returns to SVU

Gloria ReubenIt's the return of a familiar face and a farewell in the fourth episode of Law & Order: SVU, TV Guide Magazine has learned exclusively. First, Gloria Reuben will reprise her role as U.S. Attorney Christine Danielson from several years back and reunite with SVU chief Neal Baer, her former ER producer.

"We're bringing back characters we love this season," Baer promises. In a very intense case involving child slavery, she deputizes Benson and Stabler as U.S. marshals so they can leave Manhattan, says Baer.

The old friend making its farewell at the end of the episode is the familiar SVU squad room, which will become history "when all hell breaks loose." Expect a new shiny set when the show returns the next week. In real life, the show moved its production from New Jersey to New York City, due to a loss of tax breaks, which necessitated new sets being built. Episode 5 also introduces Paula Patton as the show's new ADA. "It's all things fresh," says Baer.

2010.08.18 - Law & Order SVU is Heading West

A source revealed to Access Hollywood on Tuesday that later this month, an episode of the New York City based crime drama will be shot on the West Coast for the first time in show’s history.

The episode will focus on an investigation involving a rape kit, which will take Detective Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) from New York City to Los Angeles. The episode will shoot while Mariska is in LA for the Primetime Emmy Awards later this month. Mariska is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the event.

Victims of sexual crimes have found an advocate in Mariska, who visited Washington, D.C., in March to lobby against rape kit backlogs. The 46-year-old actress also founded the Joyful Heart Foundation (an organization which aims to empower survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse) in 2004 after discovering staggering sexual assault statistics while preparing for her role on “SVU.”

The West Coast episode will air on September 29 and will also introduce Skeet Ulrich’s character (Det. Rex Winters) from “Law & Order: Los Angeles” before he appears in the LA franchise, which makes its debut on NBC later that night.

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, “Meet the Parents” actress Teri Polo is the latest addition to the “Law & Order: Los Angeles” cast, and will play Skeet’s on screen wife — a former hard-nosed cop who retires to have a family.

Catch the two-hour season premiere of “Law & Order: SVU” on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 9 PM on NBC.

MarciaOscar-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden, who received a 2007 Emmy Award nomination for her guest appearance as Federal Agent Dana Lewis on NBC's Law & Order: SVU, is making a return visit to the mean Manhattan streets patrolled by Detectives Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and Benson (Mariska Hargitay).

Last seen in the eighth season premiere, Dana will return in the eighth episode of SVU's upcoming 12th season. Dana, fans may recall, debuted in 2005 under her alias, Star Morrison, in a disturbing case involving a white supremacist group and murdered schoolchildren.

2010.08.07 - Richard Belzer Fears Humans More Than Any Animal

With a resume that would make most actors weep, one of the most recognizable mugs on television and a furry sidekick named Bebe, Richard Belzer has all the panache of an acting legend.

His portrayal of Detective John Munch on 'Law & Order' has set a few Hollywood records -- Munch is the only fictional character, played by a single actor, to appear on ten different television shows across five different networks.

On August 8 at 8PM ET/PT, Belzer will lend his talents to a very different project, narrating Animal Planet's 'The Uprising,' a 2-hour special examining fatal interactions between animals and humans.

"Humans are the most terrifying, the most cunning, the most destructive..." Belzer answers when asked what animal he fears most. Watch the video

(I do agree with that 100% /MadneZ)

2010.08.02 - Jennifer Love Hewitt to Guest Star on SVU

After whispering to ghosts and playing a masseuse in a summer TV movie, Jennifer Love Hewitt is taking on the most serious role of her career. "In our third hour, airing September 29, Jennifer will be playing a woman named Vicki who has been raped multiple times and is afraid to leave her house," Law & Order: SVU executive producer Neal Baer tells me exclusively. "One of the reasons we wanted to do this episode is because it addresses Mariska Hargitay's passion for rape kits, which can help gather evidence to convict the rapists. But for some reason these kits have been sitting around unopened in cities all over the country."

Mariska, who has brought attention to the value of rape kits through her Joyful Heart Foundation, will also be shooting scenes in Los Angeles for this same episode. Since this will be the lead in to Law and Order: Los Angeles' premiere, it seems likely that Mariska's Olivia will be interacting with the new franchise's cast to help lead viewers into Dick Wolf's latest franchise. No comment from Baer on that.

2010.07.11 - Law and Order SVU leaves NB

A television show that has filmed in North Bergen for 11 years and pumped millions of dollars into the state and local economy has moved to New York City because New Jersey has ended its tax incentive program for film production.

Since its inception in 1999, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” has maintained sound stages and support facilities in NBC’s Central Archives building on West Side Avenue in North Bergen. The location was chosen by the network when the spin-off was created from the original “Law & Order” and includes the show’s courtroom and police station sets.

New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie, faced with a $10.7 billion budget gap, chose to cut New Jersey’s film and television tax-credit program from the state budget this year. Since 2006, the program offered 20 percent tax credits for certain production costs for companies filming in New Jersey. It was created to attract more filming to the state, and to boost the economy.

According to published reports, “Law & Order: SVU,” just in wages alone, brought about $540 million into the state over the last 11 years. North Bergen film liaison to the New Jersey Film Commission, Maurena Luzzi, said that cities and local businesses also stand to lose money.

“[Filming] helped the merchants in town,” said Luzzi. “There was a [local] company that made the signs when they would change street signs…it’s like a ripple effect.”

The production has moved to the original “Law & Order’s” former studio at Chelsea Piers on the west side of Manhattan, which was vacated after the original show was cancelled after its 20th season. It was a business decision that they were forced to make, said a NBC Universal official last week.

Meanwhile, as New Jersey ended its program, the New York state legislature agreed to a $2.1 billion incentive designed to bring more television and movie production into New York. The funds will be spread out over five years, with $420 million being allocated every year, equaling a 30 percent tax credit.

Effect in North Bergen

Luzzi said that in the past, when one show ended production, another show would move into its space. Now SVU’s former location on West Side Avenue is likely to remain dormant, at least when it comes to television production, she said.

Luzzi said that several people from the show called and asked if there was anything North Bergen could do, and she is sad and upset that there was nothing that could be done.

She said that one producer told her that he would prefer to keep filming in the state, being a resident himself, but that it was ultimately a “business decision.”

Luzzi said that the show was “very good” to them, giving the town anywhere from $200 to $500 whenever they filmed at exterior locations in town. The funds were put toward the North Bergen Players, a non-profit theater group, and helped pay for other community theatre productions and workshops.

Mayor Nicholas Sacco noted that even the restaurants that “Law & Order: SVU” employees ordered lunch from will lose business.

Sacco: long term effects

Sacco, who is also a state Senator, said that he did not vote for the elimination of the tax credits in the budget and was opposed to it. He said he knew it would drive the film industry out of New Jersey.

“We’re losing businesses in the long run, and you lose taxes in the long run,” said Sacco.

He said that cutting the program may have worked to balance the budget, but in the long run, the state will not bring in the same revenue that it did with the film tax incentives.

“I just hope it doesn’t chase all of the filming out of New Jersey,” said Luzzi.

2010.07.06 - Law & Order: SVU Signs Lost Alum

1Lost alum Henry Ian Cusick, who played the time-traveling Desmond Hume on the ABC series, is leaping to NBC. He has signed on for at least two fall episodes of Law & Order: SVU, playing a graphic artist named Erik Weber.

SVU executive producer Neal Baer, a fan of Lost, tells me he cast Ian because he is "a sharp, smart leader and very charismatic."

Could Ian finally help Detective Benson (Mariska Hargitay) get over her long romantic dry spell? (Her last lover was Kurt Moss, played by Bill Pullman, way back in 2008!) "There might be some flirtation," Baer says. "Erik meets Olivia when he comes to someone's aid. And then we'll see how it goes. Olivia is devoted to her job and knows that comes first."

While this comes as good news to us, somewhere out there Penny Widmore is sobbing. SVU is also looking for a big-name female to replace the departing Sharon Stone. Maybe Sonya Walger (Penny) could play that role?!
